West paces the multi-speed economy” by Michael Dwyer

The mining boom may have made Western Australia the epicentre of the national economy this year, but eastern states also pulled their weight in terms of employment growth and construction activity.

The strongest commodities boom in more than a century has led to a surge in business investment in WA, but far more developments are in the pipeline and a backlog of projects is building up.

It’s really very simple: the minerals belong to all Australians. Miners have been paying reduced royalties since the 1960s, courtesy of sweetheart deals with state governments. As a result, the states’ infrastructure is run down or non-existent.
